But they didn't. The Supreme Court did what I knew they were going to do, siding with free speech, however hateful, however hurtful, however wrong. I'm devastated that they sided with these motherfuckers by an 8-1 count. And I'm shocked that I now have to side with, of all people, Samuel Alito. Samuel fucking Alito.
He had the balls to say that the First Amendment actually has limits: "Our profound national commitment to free and open debate is not a license for the vicious verbal assault that occured in this case."
I'm cribbing this part of his dissenting opinion from National Public Radio because it's awesome:
I fail to see why actionable speech should be immunized simply because it is interspersed with speech that is protected. The First Amendment allows recovery for defamatory statements that are interspersed with nondefamatory statements on matters of public concern, and there is no good reason why respondents' attack on Matthew Snyder and his family should be treated differently. He goes on to say that these Westboro cum-suckers won't have their free speech taken away from them; Alito says that they have other forums in which to spew their crazy bile. Exactly! The city can make them protest on the city square, 20 miles away from the funeral. But the rest of the Supreme Court wants to protect this shit?
A sad, sad day indeed. The only thing this does is empower these Westboro subhumans to insult more families in their time of vulnerability. If the Supreme Court is backing them up, why not hurt more loved ones of soldiers who died for this country so that these shits can make fun of them?
Guess it's time for some acutal justice.
