The Weekly Minnesota Sports Survey

#-1: Twins (Last Week: -1).  Another 3-3 week.  And just like last week, the Twinks had to overcome a three-game losing streak in order to reach .500.  This time they took their three losses first before getting their three wins, most notably a 16-3 dicksmack of the Chicago White Sox Sunday.  (By the way, the White Sox have given up 16 runs twice in their past three games.  On Tuesday they got shut out by Texas 16-0 at home.)  Want to single out Kennys Vargas for hitting his first big-league home run Tuesday night; he accounted for all the club's offense in their 3-1 win over San Diego.

I didn't have anything planned to say for a team that has a chance to finish dead last in the American League Central Division for a fourth straight year.  But Paul Swydan of ESPN.com (behind the paywall) noted a couple things about the team as it remains a longshot contender for worst squad in Major League Baseball: The pitching corps' Fielding Independent Pitching over the past month is in the top third of MLB (Phil Hughes struck out nine over six innings in Tuesday's victory over the Padres), and the offense has gotten better lately with the rise of rook Danny Santana, the reemergence of Josh Willingham and, strangely enough, the trade of Kendrys Morales, who I guess wasn't all that he was cracked up to be.

They finish up a two-game series against San Diego this (Wednesday) afternoon, which is the only series they have at home before going back out on the road against the best team in the majors, Oakland, then visiting fast-emerging Houston.
