Analyzing The Bracketology

So The Bracket Matrix did update yesterday/Sunday afternoon while I was at the Twin Cities Auto Show.  I don't exactly know what teams were moved around, but teams did move.

And it turns out that the bracket was unlike nearly all the prognosticators because my alma mater got royally screwed out of The Big Dance.  Everyone thought they were in and safe, and yet here they are, going to the NIT.

In the afternoon the total seed list was released courtesy of journalist Nicole Auerbach.  This is the list where the 68 teams which made the tournament, automatic bids and at-large bids, are put in order of "best" team.  The auto-bids of mid- and low-majors comprise the back end of this seed list, but you can tell where and thus which teams have to play the play-in games, and more importantly, in which order.  From this list you can tell which team gets to play in the "actual" tournament.  And from an interview with Selection Committee Chair Bruce Rasmussen, I now know the Last Team Out, and thus all the teams I need to know to set up the markers for the tournament:

  • Actual Last Team In/Team 64: Oklahoma
  • First Play-In Team/Team 65/Should By All Rights Be The Last Team Out: UCLA
  • Last Play-In Team/Team 68: Syracuse
  • Last Team Out/Team 69: Notre Dame
