You may not have heard, but if you checked out their Twitter feeds and Facebook pages and found "does not exist" messages, you may have gotten the message. Apparently last Monday Fox Sports fired all their "FOX Sports Girls," the models each of its regional sports networks used as a street team and on-air spokeswomen for their commercials. I think this is the full roster of what they euphemistically called "ambassadors" here, although if they're all fired, I don't know how long that page is going to stay up.
This "FOX Sports Girls" program isn't a long-honored tradition; they began popping up on RSNs not too long ago, recent enough where you'd see it for the first time and go, "Hey, aren't using cute babes and telling them to read cue cards and smile kind of sexist?" And yet I'm sure most sports fans didn't mind. They remain predominantly male, and so these girls re-codify the image of sports as male domination, where women are there to be ogled and masturbated over when they show up on the TV. So in that sense FOX was sort of, for lack of a better word, brave for giving sports fans what they really want and dropping any pretense that the fans' collective id would control itself and accept gender equality in this masculine bastion. They should have, in fact, gone all the way and put these girls in really tight shirts, if not bikinis. Because, hey, come on -- that's what we really want!
But now that they've been fired from their jobs (they did get paid for being "FOX Sports Girls," right?), there is now only one path of new employment, of course: Playboy! Get on it, Playboy! In fact, I just tweeted PB to do it. I think it's a great idea!
